Avery’s Creek Elementary School’s (ACES) third and fourth graders embarked on a rhythm-filled adventure that drummed up some serious fun!
This one of a kind musical activity left students marching to the beat of their own drum. Steve Campbell, of Dancing Drum LLC, filled the stage of the gymnasium with a variety of drums and other instruments.
For over 20 years, Dancing Drum has led schools across the country in interactive drumming programs and professional development workshops. Mr. Campbell’s musical experience encompasses the techniques and traditions of West African, Afro-Cuban and Brazilian drumming.
Music Specialist, Melody McGarrahan said she is always looking for opportunities to bring outside professionals to ACES as a way to grow a student’s love for music.
“I love giving students the opportunity to play with authentic instruments, which are not always available in my classroom,” she said. “It’s always refreshing to see students work together to build a school community through music education, all while learning about music on a Global scale.”
This experience was made possible by grant through the Buncombe County Schools Foundation.
