Amanda Herbert, School Counselor
I'm so glad to be here at Avery's Creek!  I joined Josh Williams in the Counseling Department in August 2009.  I divide my time between Avery's Creek and Fairview Elementary School, where I am also an elementary school counselor.  Prior to this, I worked at West Buncombe Elementary School and served a joint internship at Black Mountain Elementary and Black Mountain Primary School.  I completed my Masters of Education in School Counseling from Western Carolina University in December 2008.  Before I became a school counselor, I was a secondary school English teacher in London, England for several years.
As a school counselor, my focus is on offering developmental and preventive services to students.  Classroom guidance lessons are built around personal, social and academic concerns and my aim is to strengthen every child's individual potential in these areas.
Counseling sessions are offered at both the individual and group level.  Some of the group topics offered in the past have included social skills, anger management, focus and organizational skills, friendship groups and a girls' Encourager group. As a counselor, I make use of music, puppetry, bibliotherapy, artistic expression and movement during whole class lessons and individual/group counseling sessions.
Please feel free to contact me with any concerns you may have regarding your child's needs.  I am at Avery's Creek every Thursday and Friday, with Wednesdays alternating.
