Health Information for ACES Students

Vision Screening:

If you received a vision letter from the Lion’s Club it is because your child did not pass the vision screening both at the health fair and the Lion’s Club rescreening. Please make an appointment with an optometrist, and let me know the results of that visit. If you have questions, you can e-mail me at

Dental Screening:

If you received a dental letter from me, it is because the county dental hygienist, Deborah Plemmons found something about your child's teeth that warrants an office visit to the dentist. Please let me know what the dentist did for your child.

If you have questions, please email me at

Asthma and diabetes camps:

Brochures for Camp We Can Do offered by Mission Children’s Hospital for children with asthma or diabetes are available for camp this summer. If you indicated an interest in your child participating, your child should have already brought home the information. If you would like a brochure, an application or an application for a reduced fee, you could obtain these from me, or by going to You can also call Mission Children’s Clinic at 828-213-1020. The deadline for registering is 3/20/09. Although the price for camp is $500.00, they do offer reduced fees for low-income families. Call me at 828-989-8905 or e-mail me at

Vaccine News:
If you are the parent of a fifth grader, please remember that a Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccine is now required for students entering middle school. Once your child enters middle school you will have 30 days to present proof of vaccination. If your child has had a tetanus-containing vaccine (such as a Td or Dtap) within the last five years, this requirement will be waived, but you still have to present evidence of the shot. If you have questions, you can call the Immunization Department at the Buncombe County Health Center at 250-5096 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on week days.
